GM Hybrid's Hope to Turn Dubai Green by signing Pact with Goverment
I've been complaining all week about the traffic congestion, smog and air pollution here in Dubai during my coverage of the Dubai Motor Show. Being here reminds me of Los Angeles before they got it together and reduced emissions significantly. It hurts to breathe here and the air quality both visually and otherwise is horrible. On the heels of all this complaining, GM and Dubai’s Roads and Transportation Authority had an eco-friendly press conference today to announce a agreement could lead to one of the largest hybrid fleets in the world. The accord is groundbreaking because it demonstrates the common goal of General Motors, Dubai RTA and the Government of Dubai to reduce their impact on the environment – even in a region that is rich in oil-resources.
"Becoming environmentally-friendly is the talk of the town", said His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman & Executive Director of the Dubai RTA, this afternoon during a press conference where he and Terry Johnsson, President of General Motors Middle East Operations and Maureen Kempston Darkes, GM Group President and President of GM Latin America, Africa and the Middle East signed an agreement for the operation of ten GM environmentally-friendly hybrid vehicles in Dubai. This agreement is a first step in a comprehensive plan to reduce emissions resulting from vehicle exhaust systems, and to make all vehicles in Dubai environmentally-friendly.
"This ceremony is a momentous event that will make history for the entire Middle East and beyond, This is the first of its kind agreement in the Middle East to test innovative hybrid technology vehicles in Dubai-positioning Dubai as the Middle East's pioneers in energy diversity. Together, we are partnering to bring cutting-edge technology to a cutting-edge society", said Maureen Kempston Darkes.
His Excellency Matar Al Tayer said that this initiative comes in implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai to seek a safe, clean and attractive and sustainable environment that lives up to the reputation and prestige of the Emirate. It also comes in the framework of RTA’s commitment to protect life and property, preserve the environment and natural resources, improve standards of occupational health and public safety, and implement all the necessary technologies to reduce noise levels caused by means of transportation.
In January 2008, Dubai’s Roads and Transportation Authority an operational trial of 10 GM hybrid taxi's - 5 all-new Chevy Tahoe’s, equipped with 2-mode hybrid engines and 5 Chevy Malibu’s.
The press conference was followed by a reveal of the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid decked out in a cool eco-friendly green paint scheme. This announcement comes during a week where Dubai is hosting the Dubai Air Show, the Dubai Motor Show and the Motor City Dubai Motorsport Festival.
