Judith Schumaker Principal, Schumaker Chevrolet About the Spirit of Leadership Award
Established in 1999, the WAAI's "Spirit of Leadership" award is presented annually to professional women in the automotive industry in recognition of their significant accomplishments in their profession, community, and family. These women have dedicated their life to their profession and to giving back to others; and they serve as mentors and are role models to us all. Sustained superior performance, community involvement, influence and support of other women within the automotive industry are just some of the qualities these women possess.
A Spirit of Leadership award is given for three automotive business sectors: 1) manufacturer, 2) dealership, and 3) supplier. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone you know for this award, nominations for 2009 are due by October 31, 2008 to Lorraine Schultz (fax: 248-646-6721; e-mail: lhswaai@aol.com).

The 95-year-old matriarch of the Heller family, (1919-2006), resisted pressure to sell the family's Ford dealership after her husband's death in a plane crash in 1959. I wanted to share her story as she is a great woman with the drive and spirit to navigate her car dealership through rough waters.
Born Helen Maxine Hill on Dec. 18, 1910, in Waitsburg, Wash., she was the middle of five children. Helen shared her early life with two brothers and two sisters, working with the parents of Scottish and English descent in the family's bakery businesses in Minnesota, Iowa, Washington and Long Beach, Calif.
On Sept. 17, 1933, Helen Maxine Hill married Homer Miller Heller in a family ceremony at her parents' Long Beach home. The couple met in junior high school in Long Beach and also attended Cal Poly High School there. They shared a Dec. 18 birth date, two years apart. The late Mr. Heller, born in Halsey, Neb., in 1908, had moved to the city from Grand Junction, Colo., after the 1923 death of his 54-year old father, Andrew Jackson Heller.
Homer Heller, 14, and his older brother John, 18, hitch-hiked to Long Beach in November 1923 to be with relatives and take jobs so they could send for their mother and two sisters, who arrived from Colorado by train the following February. And older brother followed later.
Let's give a great big round of opplause for Crystal L. Windham! Crystal was appointed Director of General Motors North American Passenger Car Design on November 1, 2008. In her new position, Windham will head the interior design for the following architectures in GM North America: Global Midsize Car, Global Compact Car, and Global Small Car.
Crystal, 35, a lead designer on the 2008 award winning Chevy Malibu "Car of the Year", began her career at GM North America Design in 1994 and has held assignments across brand studios, including an International Assignment at Adam-Opel from 1997-1998.
"A mentor guided me towards automotive design. Without guidance and support from family and co-workers, I wouldn't be where I am today. I truly love my job- it's creative, expressive - but it is not easy. Enjoying what you do, however, makes it all worthwhile. I hope other young women will look to what I have done and be inspired to consider automotive design," she said.
OneCommand has announced that it will sponsor the Women's Automotive Association International (WAAI) Southern California Speed Networking Happy Hour on August 12, from 7pm-10pm, at the Clubhouse Restaurant in South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa, California.
Speed networking introduces attendees to a new person every five minutes and is an incredibly effective networking forum. The event is open to both men and women.
WAAI has been coordinating the timing of these networking opportunities to align with important industry events (such as the New York Auto Show), and members report they have been extremely successful. Attendees have given great feedback, saying the events are not only enjoyable, but a very effective way to make valuable business contacts. This speed networking event is being held the night before the 2008 Next Generation Automotive CRM Conference in Costa Mesa, California.
Women In Trucking (WIT) -- a non-profit organization created to encourage the employment of women and assist in promoting a more female-friendly environment for those already in the trucking industry -- recently celebrated its one-year anniversary and hit a record one thousand corporate and individual members.
"Our rapid growth confirms what we've known all along," said Ellen Voie, WIT chairwoman, "that an association like this was long overdue! With a very active board combined with enthusiastic members we firmly believe we can make a difference in the trucking industry. One of our goals when we started WIT a year ago was to have a thousand members before the end of our first year. We've met that goal, and now we hope to double again within the next six months."
Women in Trucking was officially founded on March 12, 2007 as a means to encourage women to consider a career in the trucking industry, but to also provide a platform to voice the successes and struggles of those women already in the male-dominated field. WIT strives to promote women’s accomplishments and minimize obstacles to their career growth and development.

Meet Bonita Stewart who is the
director of the automotive vertical at Google. Stewart is responsible
for leading a national team that develops and manages Google's
relationships with automotive marketers. Stewart is part of the
vertical markets group at Google which are senior industry specialists
who help marketers in specific industries address their unique
objectives and challenges.
Recently she was interviewed by Jodi Harris at iMedia on her predictions. Here is an excerpt:
Harris: Green marketing and reducing oil
consumption seem to be major focal points for the coming year, and the
rise in mobile technology and niche social marketing indicate that that
localization will become a key marketing touchpoint for conveying
brands' positions. What thoughts or best practice recommendations can
you share to help automotive marketers strategize for these big issues
in 2008?
Stewart: First, automotive marketers should
implement localization on two levels -- brand and dealer. Brand
marketers have the unique opportunity today to deliver relevant
messages to their precise target, whether it's a potential hybrid
customer or someone interested in fuel economy, through contextual
targeting. Meanwhile, dealers have the opportunity to geographically
target their products and services, and mobile technology offers the
ability to connect with a dealer during the shopping process. Continue reading her interview on iMedia here: http://www.imediaconnection.com/content/18294.asp
