Women in Motorsports Blog Carnival - July 17
Doug and Brenda Hurley of Castle Rock are one of the most successful husband-wife teams in River City Speedway's 21-year history. They’ve each won a CCRA title and consistently finish in the top five of their division every year.
Brenda, 40, leads the women’s division with 426 points and has notched four top-three finishes with her Meyer’s Auto Body/21st Century Towing 1980 Chevy. Doug also drives the car in sportsman races and is ranked third at 373. Defending champ Curt Nusom of Gresham is first at 402 and Tricia “Great” Brittain of St. Helens is second (394).
“I’m very pleased with being in third, especially considering I’m driving what is basically a street stock car in the sportsman class,” said Doug, 42. “Brenda and I are having a pretty good season so far. The car is running great and it’s been handling extremely well on the track. We’re having lots of fun, too, which is really the best part about stock car racing.”
Cindy McCain is trying to convince voters that she has blue-collar roots - as beer heiresses often do.
She showed up at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to talk about her love of racing.
"The first years I started going to Indianapolis, women were not allowed in pits or in gasoline alley," she said. "So I had to hang on the fence. I didn't know any better in those days because that's the way it had always been."
And her favorite race care driver?
"I'm a huge fan of Danica Patrick," she said. "She's a woman, and she's excelled ... in a very difficult sport for a woman to compete, and she's done well, she's held her head high. She's just a great inspiration to women."
Ana Beatriz of Brazil became the first woman to win on the Firestone Indy Lights Series.
Beatriz is one of five women who have taken part in the series, that started in 2002, to help develop drivers for the Indy Racing League's IndyCar series.
"Our car was the best one today, and we did it," Beatriz said.
"I'm really, really happy to win as a driver, a driver that came from Brazil as a rookie in the series and really happy to be a winner as a driver," she said. "I don't know about gender."
Justin Timberlake is in it to meet Danica Patrick.
Timberlake, who will host the 16th edition of the ESPN awards show from the Nokia Theater in L. A. on July 20, participated in a conference call Thursday in which he was asked about his golf handicap ("from about 4 to 10, depending if I’m on tour"); his favorite athlete ("Tiger Woods, now. Michael Jordan when I was kid."); his proudest sports moment ("My jumper on [TNT analyst] Kenny Smith on national television, that Barkley won’t let him live down")—and whether he might make reference to the tabloid frenzy surrounding the Yankees slugger and the pop matron.
“I’ve never met Danica Patrick. I’d like to meet Danica. I think she’s talented.”
Wilton’s Laura Hayes won her first stock car race in Saturday’s featured NASCAR late-model event at All American Speedway, following Golden State Racing teammate Kristin Bumbera into Victory Lane at the Roseville track.
The teenage Hayes battled bumper to bumper with her other teammate, current Roseville points leader John Moore, for her breakthrough victory.
Angelle Sampey talks about her tough season in the NHRA.
"Although this season hasn't gone as we've planned yet," said Sampey. "I do have to say that I am proud to still be in the sport and am still having fun after eleven years now. I want to thank everyone that supports my team in anyway, especially Rush Racing Products, CycleSpot.com, Doc's Harley-Davidson, Royal Purple, Bates Leathers, and all of our sponsors that give us the opportunity to have the greatest job in the world. Thank you for all you do and especially for believing in us. We will get to the winners circle soon!"
