Child Seat Safety Education Begins and Ends With Safe Kids
Did you know that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under? Did you also know that from 1998 to 2007, approximately 365 children--most of them aged three and younger--died from heat stroke after being trapped in a car?
Both of these statistics are especially heartbreaking because, in most cases, a small amount of parental awareness and education can prevent these tragic injuries and deaths. In fact, when correctly used, child safety seats are extremely effective, reducing the risk of death by as much as 71 percent. It's as easy as correctly installing -- and ALWAYS buckling your child into -- the appropriate seat.
With summer around the corner, now is the time to educate families and children about safety in and around the car, so on Thursday, June 12, Safe Kids Buckle Up, Safe Kids USA, and longtime sponsors General Motors and Chevrolet are kicking off the summer with a safety program intended to educate families about this important, important concern.
The day's activity will also inspect child safety seats for hundreds of families in the Los Angeles area, and a landmark of the event will include the milestone one-millionth seat the organization has checked for proper installation. In addition to the car seat inspections, interactive displays will give families important information on preventing other dangers like leaving children in hot cars, back-over accidents, and trunk entrapment.
While it is sponsored by General Motors, please note that the Safe Kids Buckle Up program is open to owners of all makes of vehicles in an effort to protect children. The event runs from 10am to 2pm on Thursday June 12,2008, and will be held at Parking Lot #6 of the Los Angeles Sports Arena, 3939 S. Figueroa, Los Angeles, CA 90037. A Bilingual Spanish speaker will also be present at the event.
PARENTS TAKE NOTE: Even though you may not be able to attend this day's event in the Los Angeles area, it is part of an ongoing national program developed by Safe Kids USA and sponsored by General Motors and Chevrolet to educate parents and caregivers across the United States about the importance of properly restraining children on every ride. After this day's event, the program will have inspected one million car seats; held approximately 45,000 car seat checkup events around the country; donated approximately 365,000 car seats to families in need, and educated more than 15 million parents and caregivers since 1997.
