From the lack of women in NASCAR to fearless ladies of the NHRA, this week AskPatty.com zooms readers through the blogosphere to round-up all the top news in the world of women in motorsports.
There might not be a female race car driver in any of NASCAR's top series. But that is not preventing females from making in roads in other areas of the sport. "I see women every day when I'm at the track, not just a bunch of them cheering in the stands, but working on teams," said DeLana Harvick, a Busch and Truck Series owner and wife of Nextel Cup driver Kevin Harvick.
"Women can do what the guys can in this sport if they want to. I think we'll see a female driver compete full-time at some point, too."
Auto expert Barbara Terry is taking a break from her writing duties at The Houston Chronicle and her numerous television appearances to join Glacier Bear Racing as head driver on their team to race in the Baja 1000, November 10-16, 2007.
Good luck!
On December 1st, race car driver Karen Salvaggio will compete at “25 Hours of Thunderhill”––the longest endurance race in North America. Her efforts will benefit the United Spinal Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for all Americans with spinal cord injuries or disorders.
Since 2002, the 25 Hours of Thunderhill race has been held annually at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, California. The event, which was developed by the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) and sponsored by the U.S. Air Force, attracts amateur, factory sponsored, and professional race teams from all over the world.
After the recently announced upgrade from World Cup to World Championship, the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship has hired Champion Stefy Bau as the Manager of the series.
It's quite an undertaking for Bau and confirms Youthstream’s commitment into the series, which will feature a total of five rounds in 2008, to be held together with the FIM MX1/MX2 Grand Prix’s.
Peggy Llewellyn finished her championship contending, first full year on the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle circuit with a second round loss to new series champion Matt Smith at the season finale at Pomona, California. "It's been a learning season," said Llewellyn.
"I learned what it is to run a full year on the POWERade tour and run for a championship. I experienced that all in one year. "My weekend in Pomona started off pretty good," Peggy continued, hesitantly. "But I need to make more good, consistent passes. On my first qualifying pass, George (crew chief George Bryce) noticed that I rolled at the line a lot."
Castrol GTX driver Ashley Force's day ended with a second round loss, but she locked up a Top 10 finish when Arend fell to teammate Burkart. Ms. Force, the former cheerleader and Top Alcohol Dragster pilot, completed her rookie campaign driving the 8,000 horsepower Ford Mustang to one final round appearance and four semi final appearances.
"I'm finishing in the Top Ten because of (crew chiefs) Ron Douglas and Dean Antonelli. I helped out here and there. Mainly it was them and my team. We were out for a while in 16th place because we missed a race. The fact that we were able to get back in the top ten this weekend was exciting," said Force.
